WANDERERS OR CONQUERORS?

WEEK 3:

Icebreaker

How would you describe your favorite meal — appetizer, drink, entree and dessert?

Recap

We adopt habits in life and get used to things the way they are. Sometimes we like it, and sometimes we don’t, but we are used to it; and what we get used to, we are comfortable with. It often feels like God is throwing curve balls at us in life, but that’s just  because He wants us to continue to grow (not stagnate). Faith plateaus if life plateaus. Change and trials provide an atmosphere for faith to keep growing. This week we learned how God instructs us to navigate our way through the changes He calls us to, in order to move into the territory God wants to give us.

Scripture Reference

Exodus 14:13-16

Focus Questions

The Discovery Bible Study (DBS) method uses eight foundational questions meant to encourage, connect, discover, apply, and multiply. Stick with the scripture referenced above. Allow God to speak to you through this specific passage without looking at other books or scripture. This allows for new discoveries to happen!

Connection: Let’s follow up from last week.

  1. How did it go taking your next step in obedience from last week?
  2. What wins did you have this past week?
  3. What wins are you hoping to have this coming week?

Discovery: Let’s dive into today’s scripture (Exodus 14:13-16).

  1. What does this teach you about God?
  2. What does this teach you about mankind?
  3. What questions, doubts, or breakthroughs do you have from this scripture?

Apply: Let’s live this scripture out!

  1. How can I apply what I have just learned this week?
  2. Which two people will I share this with?

This Week

We tend to become comfortable and stuck in our own ways, even when we feel those tugs on our heart from God to make some necessary changes in our lives. What is something that you know you need to walk away from? Perhaps it’s toxic relationships, dangerous behaviors, changes in spending habits or making better health choices, but you know some area in your life isn’t working right now and you’re just stuck.

We want change, but if we are honest, we would also admit we’d like to avoid the hard work, difficulties, and discipline required to make those changes.

When you begin to face opposition to making a lasting change (i.e. hard work, difficulties, discipline) it is very tempting to go back to where you came from and what you know. What sends you back? Fear of rejection? Fear of failure? Maybe someone speaking lies into your life telling you that the change you seek isn’t worth it. What is the part that makes it most difficult for you to continue?

As a follower of Christ, we will always have trials, but we do not need to have fear in those trials. God tells us in Exodus 14:13-16 that we do not need to be afraid, that we need to hold our ground, that we need to be still (keep our peace; silence the negativity) and then we can move on and take that next step in faith.

What stage are you in? What stage do you need to move into? Can you trust God with your next step?

We know that our response to change is always rooted in either Faith or Fear. Faith is anchored to our future; fear is always anchored to our past. Do you want to stay in the past, or move into the future God has planned for you? What can you do this week to take that next step in faith toward conquering the change God has called you to?

Take time this week to read Exodus 14. It’s not a long chapter, so try to read it multiple times. Before each reading, ask God to open your mind as you read His truth. Ask God to help you to be willing to be taught what the will of God is in your life and to give you a willing heart and the opportunity to share with others the truth God teaches you through reading His word.
