The G.O.A.T. Week Two DG
Matthew 5:17-30
Pastor Josh said when it comes to sin, or things that are harmful to us or others – we start categorizing in our minds what we think is worse. He gave to two examples:
If I were to say which is worse – hatred or murder. Most of us would say murder.
If I were to say which is worse – lust or adultery. Most of us would say adultery.
Are you willing to share a time with the Group when you naturally categorized where things would land on the scale of “badness”? Did you start to decide whether or not to do it based on how bad it could impact you?
For Leaders – We play this worst case scenario in our mind and then decide if it’s worth it. Pastor Josh gave the example of walking through a mansion he paid a tour for and started opening doors. Lisa commented that they were going to places that weren’t allowed. Josh thought, “What’s the worst that could happen?” because if it didn’t seem like the worst could happen…is it really the worst thing if I do it? Is it that big of a deal?
How much should Christians consider that not being salt and light to those around us is one of the worst things that could happen? In our family? In our job?
For Leaders – we are designed to impact those around us for good by being salt and light. (vv13-19). Salt that permanently loses its flavor turns out to be worthless and the light from Christ in us is not supposed to be hidden! True Story – Before Tony Bennett (Head basketball coach Virginia and a Christian) was going to lead his team against Texas Tech for their first ever NCAA Basketball Tournament win, he received a text of encouragement from Dabo Sweeney (Head Football Coach at Clemson who won two national titles and a Christian as well). Dabo said to Tony in a text before the game. “Make sure that the light that is in you burns brighter than the lights that are on you right now.” (v. 16)
Is there anyone in your life that you feel lives so righteously that you could never measure up to it? Explain to the group why you feel that way.
For Leaders – Jesus said, I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven. He says their righteousness needed to surpass the righteousness of the Pharisees. Which for everyone listening, it’s impossible so……
…How was the cross going to do that on our behalf?
For Leaders – Jesus makes a statement that appears to be impossible. There is something that the cross is going to accomplish on our behalf. 2 Cor. 5:21 describes what Jesus did for us on our behalf. So when God sees us, he actually see the righteousness of Jesus.
How should this biblical truth impact us?
For leaders – You will receive various answers.
- It’s what Jesus will make possible through the work of the cross.
- This is what He’s calling us to.
- Paul describes who we are created to be as Christians in 2 Cor. 5:17.
- As new creation we are created to thrive when living in line with the kingdom of God.
Pastor Josh states why this matters…
When we step outside of God’s kingdom standards we abandon the protection, provision, and promises that come from the kingdom of God.
