Welcome to Week Ten of The God Experiment! During these 12-weeks, we are personally testing the extreme nature of God and talking about it with others. Building on Pastor Josh’s weekend message, we will be unpacking his content and taking it further. Feel free to use this guide or change it to fit the dynamics of your unique huddle. Reminder: While people can journey at their own pace, Monday (March 7) starts Week Ten of The God Experiment. Pastor Josh will be teaching on the weekends and huddles will be written on this schedule.
Icebreaker: Getting the conversation started.
- In your daily readings, do you have any “ah-ha” moments, questions, or challenges to what you’ve been reading? Maybe share something you wrote in the “Seek and Simmer”section for this week – page 197.
- Optional: Need something lighter to open your huddle? Try this…Pastor Josh shared about one of his favorite shows this weekend (Survivor). What is a bingeworthy show of yours and what does it show about your personality?
Focus Questions: Going deeper together.
- As we dive into talking more about leadership, who is the greatest leader that you’ve had the opportunity to follow? What made them “great”?
- Pastor Josh ended his message this weekend with many examples of why you would love to be lead by Jesus. In your opinion, what made Jesus a “great” leader?
- Turn to 1 Peter 5:1-11. (Tip: By now, people in your huddle should be more comfortable reading the Bible to others. Ask a few volunteers to help you read the passage. Want to take it up a level? Pass out pieces of paper. Each with a question listed in Question #4 to normalize what it’s like to lead discussion. )
- Discovery Bible Study questions: (1) What do you like about this passage? (2) What is confusing about this passage? (3) What does this passage say about God? (4) What does this passage say about us? (5) How do we obey this passage? (6) Who else needs to hear this passage?
- This passage serves as instructions to elders in the Church but it is also a relevant picture of what Kingdom leadership looks like. What do we learn about the job of elders in this passage? (For more on elders in the Church, see 1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9, Acts 20:13-38)
- Reread verse 2 & 3. Peter points out humility as a key factor in the kind of leadership that God desires. Why is this an essential quality for servant leaders? How do you measure up to the leader that Peter describes in this passage?
- What is the greatest quality about you that propels you to be a servant leader? What is the greatest pitfall or tendency that causes you to slip into being a lording leader? (Tip: The answer to the second question could easily be a starter list for prayer requests.)
Final Challenge: Be a servant leader this week! Leadership as the world defines it is not God’s heart for you. Serve, give, and lead like Jesus. The people in your life are counting on you.
Be sure to gather names/contact information for your weekly report.
